“One could say that I come from a shipbuilding background on my mother’s side of the family from Nova Scotia. I had many great-great uncles who built sailing ships. My mother’s stories gave me a love of ships, of the sea and of the seashore.
Many types of structures you can find at the water’s edge – wharfs, docks, seawalls – particularly those made of wood, have a ring of history about them; they are of another era. Most modern structures are now made of cement. That is why this old setting, which is said to be part of an old, abandoned bridge, appealed to me.
This setting appealed to me artistically. The accents of the birds on the pilings set up a syncopated rhythm like musical notes on a piano. I also feel that the empty space at the top of the painting is an important positive compositional element that makes a statement on its own.” Robert Bateman
