Junior Nature Sketch
Spring 2020 registration is coming soon!
Junior Nature Sketch is an 6 week outdoor nature program for kids that focuses on sketching and observing wildlife habitats in unique ecosystems. Guided by a sketch artist and a naturalist, this program encourages children to connect to natural environments in their local community using a pencil and a sketchbook.
Children learn about their local area and wildlife using established eco-literacy principles from world-renowned artist and naturalist, Robert Bateman. The cost of the program includes 5 weeks of ecosystem outings guided by an artist and a naturalist, Nature Sketch full lesson plans, a special NatureSketch Club book, and all sketching materials. The program also includes a final exhibition on week 6 where the children’s sketches will be framed and hung on display at a local venue.
We’re proud to partner with Monarch Nation to deliver Species at Risk content.
Class Location: Victoria Duncan Vancouver Calgary Saskatoon Toronto Halifax
Adult Nature Sketch

Similar to our Junior Nature Sketch program but for adults or older, mature teens. This is an indoor program with options for both beginner and intermediate/advanced adult artists.
Class Location: Victoria Duncan Vancouver Calgary Saskatoon Toronto Halifax
Junior Nature Sketch
“My daughter loved this course; she took it twice. It worked out well because we experienced the same natural areas but in different seasons. Different birds, landscapes, colours that I didn’t really pay attention to before as much as I thought I did. Excellent program.”
Many children spend more than 6 hours per day on screens, and less than 30 minutes per week in nature. Nature Sketch aims to change that – encouraging fun, developing creativity and building confidence along the way.
Appropriate for ages 5-12 yrs.
6 week program, 2.5 hrs per week.

“I’ve taken the Adult course twice. Wonderful!”
“I so enjoyed this, even though I am the least artistic person… This is not an art program. This is not a nature awareness program. It is so much more.”

Winter In-Gallery Adult Nature Sketch
8 weeks (Feb 4th – March 17th. Art show March 28th)
Ages 15 - adult. Beginner level
To keep our Nature Sketch practice happening all the year round, let’s learn nature sketching this winter in the warm & dry classroom at The Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature. We will be following the same curriculum as the usual Nature Sketch program offered outdoors in the Spring and Fall, but with more time to focus indoors and draw from specimens or photographs. We will have the opportunity to wander through the gallery space to be inspired by Robert Bateman’s art practice, as well as that of other artists showing in the gallery. We will learn how to field sketch using pencil (& with watercolours, optional) even though we are indoors.
Some supplies will be supplied by the foundation, others may need to be purchased AFTER the first class.
Time: Tuesdays 5:30pm – 8:00pm
Start date: TBC at The Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature
Winter In-Gallery Intermediate Adult Nature Sketch
8 weeks (Feb 1st – March 21st. No class Feb 8th. Art show March 28th)
Ages 15 - adult. Intermediate to advanced level
PREREQUISITE: any Nature Sketch class or equivalent experience
In this unique Nature Sketch opportunity, we welcome back Alumni of the Nature Sketch program (or folks with similar drawing background) who are ready to move on from the standard Nature Sketch curriculum, level up their experience and dive into using their nature journal as a learning tool! Each week we will do a quick review of original Nature Sketch lessons, then move on to build on those skills by studying concepts such as: angles and proportion; linear & atmospheric perspective; lighting, form, & shadow; more in-depth colour mixing & theory; as well as study of ecosystems and some structural anatomy of plants and animals. We will measure and record our observations, create and label diagrams of what we observe, study specimens up close and learn how to identify species using field guides, based only on our recorded field observations. We will learn how to direct all of these skills into the study, careful planning and execution of a final finished journal page composition that we will frame and display at the end of the session.
Time: Saturdays 1:00pm – 3:30pm
Start date: TBC at The Bateman Foundation Gallery of Nature
Winter Studio Watercolour Class
8 weeks (Feb 2nd – March 22nd. No class Feb 9th. Art show March 28th)
Ages 15 - adult. Beginner to intermediate level
For the first time, we are offering a studio watercolour techniques class! On the first day we will introduce materials and have a chance to experiment with them, demo some basic principles and techniques, and have an overview of project set up and planning. Then in subsequent classes we will dive right into several technique-based projects. We will learn various techniques such as washes, glazing, dry-brushing, wet-into-wet, various ways to create textures, paint-resist/masking; we will go further into compositions, value, colour theory and colour mixing. But most importantly we will learn how to plan your composition and execute your process. Watercolour is a fun mental challenge so come prepared to think! In our last class we will have a chance to finish up any in-process work with the help of the instructor present.
Some supplies will be supplied by the foundation, others may need to be purchased AFTER the first class.
